A superb Art Nouveau silver and enamel pendant from 1908 carrying the makers’ mark for Charles Payton as well as full English hallmarks for Birmingham assay office 1908. Charles Payton was a designer who worked with Liberty & Co on the development of their Cymric range and was, therefore, held in high esteem for his skills as a jewellery designer. This is a wonderful design and a rare thing as I certainly have not seen many of these signed Payton pieces at all. The way the green enamel has been laid in random shapes in the top section is very reminiscent of Horner and of some of the German designers of the era. Is rather Jugendstil in form. The central red stone, I believe it to be a garnet or a ruby, provides a rich, warm focus among the coolness of the silver and the pale green. An elegant and gorgeous pendant. It is on a silver chain, with its original barrel fastener and this one is lovely-being decorated with engraved / chased diamond shapes. Some wear to the stone as you would expect and a tiny air bubble (not damage) in the enamel from its manufacture. Lovely crispness to the enamelwork and silver work. The pendant measures approx 3.3cm in height (including the bale). The chain measures approx 38cm (15 inches) in length. Box in the images is for display purposes only but I will provide a new box to keep the pendant safe.
