Charles I Silver Groat, 1646. Civil War Mint at Bridgnorth-on-Severn. Charles I Groat, 1646. Declaration type, Bridgnorth-on-Severn mint, 1.71 grams, approx. 21.5-23 mm, mintmark Plumelet. Crowned and draped bust left; plumelet to left, IIII (mark of value) to right / REL : PRO :LEG : ANG :LIB : PAR : in three lines; three plumelets above and I646 below. S 3042 Brooker 1133 North 2525. After the fall of Ashbury De la Zouch on 28th Feb 1646 Royalist forces marched to Bridgnorth-on-Severn, where they held out for barely two months, eventually yielding on 26th April 1646. This coin would have been minted within that two-month period. Time was of the essence towards the end of the Civil War and coinage dies were often crude and ill maintained, the priority being to quickly produce much needed currency. Aside from the Pontefract siege pieces of 1648, this is the last dated Charles I coinage. The item “Hammered Charles I Silver Groat, 1646.
