Silver Rolex WW1 Military Cross Tribute Trench Watch/Medal. Resolven, Wales
Rare & historic World War One Tribute Officer’s Trench Wristwatch/Medal. The watch is a high quality sterling silver Rolex Chronograph watch with 18 rubies & timed six positions for all climates. It dates from 1918/19 and would have been one of the highest quality wristwatches available at the time. It is engraved “ROLEX EXTRA PRIMA QUALITY”. The watch was presented to Second Lieutenant T. Morgan from Resolven, Wales as a tribute to his bravery. The engraving on the back of the watch reads. PRESENTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF RESOLVEN TO LIEUT. FOR BRAVERY IN THE FIELD IN THE WINNING OF THE M. Note 2: I have not researched the details behind the engraving or the watch itself but I feel sure there is an interesting story there. Please do your own research. Note 3: When I took the watch to Mr Bowron in Darlington for a service it wasn’t working and the reason why is that the press cutting pictured had been inserted inside the watch case (see final photo). Clearly Lieutenant Morgan or a family member was keen to keep the press cutting associated with the watch. Weight: 31.0 gm. Diameter of watch: 32 mm. Length of watch & strap: 125 mm. 925 for sterling silver. There is a date letter “v” and other marks including a double “F” inverted & “JW”. There are lots of other finely engraved numbers to the inner back case. Resolven: A small village in Neath, Port Talbot, Wales. It is situated 8 miles north east from the town of Neath and has a population of 2,316. Note: Clearly the residents of Resolven wanted to pay tribute to Lieutenant Morgan for his bravery during WW1 so they bought for him one of the best quality silver Rolex watches they could and had it beautifully engraved for him. It is possible that Lieutenant Morgan was the only recipient of the Military Cross from Resolven during WW1 making this a very important collectors item for the village.
